Founded in 2015, Real World English was built on the principle of a two-generation approach, supporting parents by providing free English classes and free childcare, so that they can better support their children and their families.
The program has grown so much since then and thanks to our amazing supporters and team members, we hope to continue to expand and grow our services to support more and more families and more learning.

GOALS OF THE REAL WORLD ENGLISH PROGRAM ARE TO OFFER
- Free instruction in English focused on Real World English topics, plus computer literacy for adults and STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) activities for children.
- A safe and open environment for adult students and their children regardless of their native language, nationality, religion, or other social, ethnic, or racial characteristics.
- Student-centered learning relevant to student needs and based on ‘best practices’ in teaching English to speakers of other languages.
- Quality, experienced teachers who have a commitment to professional growth and a willingness to be part of a collaborative program.
- Cultural interactions and promote cross-cultural understanding.
- Cooperation with other agencies and groups in the community.
- Flexibility in adapting to trends and changes in the community, adult education, and ESL students’ needs.
- Instrucción gratuita del idioma inglés enfocada en temas del mundo real, además de clases de computación para adultos y talleres creativos de ciencia, tecnología, ingeniería, arte y matemáticas para niños.

Real World English has been blessed to receive a great deal of help along the way. Here are some of the wonderful people and organizations that have helped made this program and the services it provides possible.
- UNC Greensboro’s School of Education has provided us with meeting space, copy & printing, support for the children’s program, student volunteers, and expertise and materials from the SELF Design Center.
- Allen Middle School was an original partner in the RWE program. It has provided meeting space and financial support for the children’s program since 2015.
- Coalition for Diversity in Language and Culture (CDLC) was an original partner in the RWE program along with Allen Middle School. CDLC awarded RWE $2000 grants in 2015, 2018, and 2021.
- We received a $10,000 Family Literacy grant from Dollar General for PACT activities in 2015-16.
- Project Engaging and Advancing Community-Centered Teacher Development (aka EnACTeD) provides support for English learners and their families. RWE parents have received $25 gift cards for participating in EnACTeD’s focus groups and has purchased books and materials for RWE.
- GCS has supported some of our teachers, provided materials, and helped with us with publicity and communication
- Real World English is thrilled to collaborate with Latinx L.I.F.E. because our missions are very compatible: Latinx L.I.F.E. is dedicated to empowering the pursuit of higher education, raising awareness on community issues, and encouraging civic engagement. Latinx L.I.F.E. members have volunteered to teach English and Citizenship Examination Prep classes on Saturday mornings through the Real World English program. Volunteer opportunities to serve as Conversation Partners with RWE adults students are also available.
- UNC Greensboro’s Anthropology Department developed Recipe for Success to provide nutrition education to RWE adults in Spring 2020.
- CNNC provided an Americorps volunteer to do program evaluation and provided guest speakers from the Immigrant Health ACCESS Project. The LCCG donated bilingual dictionaries to RWE.
RWE periodically solicited donations to support the program. Donations we received were used to add extra classes, purchase bilingual books for our lending library, renew our subscription for Reading A-Z, finance a book buy for RWE families at Barnes and Noble, and to support the children’s program.
