While parents are improving their English, we offer free STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) activities for children ages 2-14. These activities focus on a theme each week such as: plants, light, flight, momentum, mass and balance, deserts, oceans, simple machines, gravity, etc.

Because free play is crucial to children’s social-emotional and intellectual development, we will also provide supervised, unstructured play time and a healthy snack.

College student volunteers support the lead teacher of the children’s program by providing supervision and leading small group, hands-on STEAM activities.

“I like the Real World English program because we have very good teachers and they show us what we need to know and because they take care of the children. The whole group, including the teachers, are very kind and they help us a lot. There is good communication between the teachers and students. I wish there were more classes and more hours.”

CHANCE Program

CHANCE logo

Campamento Hispano Abriendo Nuestro Camino a la Educación (CHANCE) is a summer college access program that brings high school Latinx and Hispanic rising seniors from across North Carolina to UNCG for several days to get experience with college level classes and faculty, leadership and civic programming, cultural enrichment, and campus life.

The main purpose of CHANCE is to encourage and equip Latinx and Hispanic students with the culturally informed awareness, knowledge, and skills to persist through high school and continue to higher education with UNCG as a school of choice. The campers learn about the resources and opportunities at UNCG, reside in a residence hall, eat in the dining hall, are mentored by UNCG students, meet staff, faculty, and alumni during their stay on campus. On the last day, typically a Saturday, there is a culminating ceremony and programming track specifically designed for the families of the campers. 25 UNCG students, including some former CHANCE Campers, serve in paid positions as Mentors and Coordinators during CHANCE week.

Requirements: Official High School Transcripts with a minimum GPA of 2.8 and a $65 non-refundable enrollment fee to be paid after selected no later than April 29.

The CHANCE experience includes:

This program encourages Latinx students to attend college by increasing their awareness of higher education and showing that it is well within their reach. Parents and family members will also receive information about UNCG and supporting their students through their college search process in their own language.

If you are interested in either assisting with, or attending, the program, contact Margarita Kerkado at m_kerkad@uncg.edu or 336.334.4090 or Marisa Gonzalez at mggonzal@uncg.edu or 336.334.5653.
