Families Celebrate Completion of Spanish Heritage Language Academy

Students, families, and educators celebrated their completion of the 2023 Spanish Heritage Language Academy (HLA) at UNC Greensboro on March 11. HLA is a long-standing partnership between UNCG and Asheboro City Schools. This program engages both students and families in project-based heritage language and cultural exchanges facilitated by ACS educators. Through the HLA program, students are not only learning the Spanish language, but also engaged in learning with their parents.

Critical Thinking in Classrooms

The din of adolescent chatter fills Sarah Born’s fourth grade classroom as small groups discuss which laws there should be for a hypothetical new colony on Mars. They excitedly debate what should be this new society’s norm and what’s reasonable to expect of its citizens. This small group discussion is the first step in one of Born’s critical thinking exercises for her students.

Combating a Lack of Internet Services: SOE Assists in Pilot Program to Bring Access to Elementary Students

When schools moved to remote status during the height of the COVID pandemic, numerous students were unable to fully participate in classes due to the lack of broadband internet access at their homes. Backed by a grant from the United States Department of Education, three members of the School of Education are joining a team led by UNC Greensboro’s Information Technology Services (ITS) unit to combat that issue.

NCCTM Bestows Highest Honor on Wilson

Dr. Holt Wilson, an associate professor in the UNC Greensboro School of Education’s Department of Teacher Education and Higher Education, was recently honored for his contribution to mathematics education in North Carolina with the W.W. Rankin Award. This distinction is bestowed annually by the North Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCCTM) and is the organization’s highest honor.

By combining these priorities, the School of Education developed the UNCG Teacher Education Fellows program, a scholarship opportunity for incoming freshmen students wishing to major in select education programs.

Elementary Education Major Concludes Successful Freshman Season on the Pitch

A preseason injury did not derail freshman elementary education major Emma Malone from having a successful inaugural collegiate season on the soccer field. The Connecticut native took over as the starting goalie for the UNC Greensboro women’s soccer team midway through the season, helping the team reach the conference finals and earning Southern Conference All-Freshman Team accolades.
