Crystal Ivey is an Elementary Education major from Charlotte, N.C., who expects to graduate in May of 2026.

Why did you choose UNCG?

I chose to attend UNCG because I loved the School of Education program and knew it was an excellent teaching program that would prepare me to become an effective educator.

What is your favorite place on campus?

My favorite place is the library or makerspace in SOE building!

What experience at UNCG has had the most significant impact on you?

My internships at UNCG have had the most significant impact on me. They provided hands-on experience in real classrooms, allowed me to apply what I learned in my courses, and strengthened my passion for teaching!

What has been your favorite class and why?

My favorite classes have been the ones that directly correlate with teaching because they have prepared me for the classroom. However, if I had to choose just one, I would say Teaching Students with Disabilities was my favorite because it gave me the skills and strategies to support all learners, foster inclusivity, and better understand how to meet the diverse needs of my future students.

What are your career goals?

My career goal is to become an effective and inspiring elementary school teacher who creates a positive and inclusive classroom environment. I also hope to continue growing professionally, eventually mentoring new teachers and possibly pursuing leadership opportunities in education.

What made you want to choose a career in this field?

I have always had a passion for teaching and working with kids, and becoming a mother has only strengthened that passion. Seeing the impact that education can have on a child’s life has inspired me to pursue a career where I can help students learn, grow, and reach their full potential!

What advice would you give a student considering UNCG and the School of Education?

My advice to a student considering UNCG and the School of Education is that you can come back at any age and still learn something new and meaningful. Especially for me, being a non-traditional student, I have felt so supported every step of the way, which has made the experience even more rewarding!

How has the Haggai Academy impacted your experience at UNCG?

Being part of Haggai has not only been helpful financially, but it has also allowed me to learn about many different aspects of education. It has taught me more about other parts of the school system, not just what happens in the classroom but also what takes place outside of it, which has given me a well-rounded perspective on the field of education!
