Deaf Education: Global Service-Learning (Faculty-Led)
Dates: May 10 – 30, 2020
Location: Shanghai, China
Program Cost: $2,650
Application Deadline: November 15, 2019

Although separated by lands and seas, and beholden of different languages (signed, spoken, and written), deaf people from around the world have a connection as belonging to one larger, global community, supporting each other, advocating for rights, and naturally, looking to share information especially as it relates to education of deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) children and youth. Since the 1600s, and more formally since the 1700s, the discussion (and at times, argument) of how best to educate DHH students has flourished.

Over the centuries, the discussion has involved Deaf and hearing professionals in the field of Deaf Education visiting “foreign lands” to share and exchange information, language, and culture, and to learn new educational approaches, returning “home” with renewed energy and forward thinking, while also strengthening the bonds of the global deaf community. In designing this program, Dr. Pagliaro and Ms. Allen want the pre-service teachers to open their minds to encompass any ‘kid’ with whom they will come in contact, and to understand the interdependency that their future DHH students have with others like them. Learn more.

Their actions resulted in a massive amount of deaths in Peru of Indigenous groups due to violence and disease. In 1821, Peru gained independence from Spain. Today Peru is a diverse country that is home to speakers of 46 Indigenous languages including Quechua and Aymara, but many aspects of colonization have remained in place. Learn more.
