The Piedmont Teacher Residency Partnership (PTRP) program is an innovative, effective residency that prepares highly-qualified, diverse teachers for success in Rockingham and Surry County Schools.

The mission of Piedmont Teacher Residency Partnership (PTRP) is to recruit and retain high quality teachers in hard to staff areas in rural districts through a university/district partnership. We want to partner with rural districts to design justice-oriented teacher education pathways grounded in local community, critical dialogue, and transformative educational experiences through making and design.

The PTRP project grew out of previous work funded with Teacher Quality Partnership (TQP) money. The first was a residency program (Project Enrich) and we are drawing on that work. The second is the Transforming Teaching through Technology (T4) Grant that worked to incorporate making in local K-8 schools (Guilford and Winston-Salem Schools). PTRP takes aspects of both – residency program and methods for supporting emergent technology integrating in schools.

Our Program

The residency program supports cohorts of students who take part in a year-long (max 18 months) clinical experience in local high-needs public schools. In exchange for the financial support during the residency year, residents agree to teach for at least three years in a high-need school in Rockingham County or Surry County following graduation.

Our People

Our staff consists of academic coaches as well as members of the UNCG School of Education faculty and staff.

Each cohort of students is comprised of 10-20 residents who will serve in the schools of one of our partner districts.

PTRP resident Justin Cunningham, center, was honored as Rockingham County's Beginning Teacher of Excellence
