ITI Kickbox is an innovation toolkit that is sparking amazing innovations by SOE students. Dr. Kimberly Kappler Hewitt, Director of Principal Preparation for Excellence and Equity in Rural Schools (PPEERS), is implementing the Kickbox innovation toolkit as a year-long experience for students who are preparing to take on leadership roles in rural schools across North Carolina.

Dr. Hewitt’s students are motivated to make an impact by addressing real-world issues and needs, such as addressing equity issues in high school math, providing elementary students remote access to rich reading materials, and helping parents use technology to support students.

Innovative ideas in the making include creating a sensory/reset room for students who have experienced trauma or stress and need a place to go when over-stimulated in the classroom, developing a sensory garden and walkway, establishing an outdoor classroom to promote place-based learning, and developing an Oasis Space to attend to faculty/staff wellness.

We look forward to learning more about the students’ projects — and their impact — this spring!
