Latinx mental health kit

Student: Camila A. Pulgar

Many Latinx clients experience stigma when grappling with a mental health concern and are unsure how to talk about what they are experiencing. The Latinx Mental Health Kit is a box full of culturally sensitive mental health resources for Latinx clients which serves as a launch pad for discussing their experiences and concerns.

What is the project’s goal?

The project’s goal is to facilitate open conversations about mental health within the Latinx community, especially between family members.

What is the innovation?

The kits include a combination of items specifically designed for Latinx clients, such as culturally sensitive coloring sheets, and items such as essential oils that have proven therapeutic value but may be new to Latinx clients.  The kits are customized by age (adult or child) and setting (clinical mental health or school).   This innovation goes beyond simply translating existing mental health resources into Spanish, allowing Latinx clients to see and accept themselves and give voice to their experiences.

What has been the impact?

Client feedback – at a local mental health clinic and community church – has been consistently positive, particularly in terms of staying connected during treatment and exploring mental health with family members.  Favorite items include the coloring sheets, essential oils and journals.
