Dr. Carl Lashley

A former associate professor in the UNC Greensboro School of Education’s Department of Educational Leadership and Cultural Foundations, Dr. Carl Lashley has been named the recipient of the 2024 Felix Barker Leadership Award. The honor is presented annually by the North Carolina Council for Exceptional Children

This award recognizes an individual who has shown outstanding leadership in the field of special education. Felix Barker’s efforts led to the enhancement of educational services with limited resources, and he played a key role in the rapid expansion of services for exceptional children in the 1960s, influenced by various societal and political factors. 

Throughout his career, Lashley served as a general and special education teacher, an elementary school principal, director of special education, and director of curriculum and instruction in West Virginia Public Schools. 

Lashley focused his research on education law; special education law, policy, and practice; technology; and school leadership preparedness. 

Lashley came to UNCG in 1998 and retired in 2022. He continues to serve as a consultant in educational leadership.
