Juliette Vayer SES student studying abroad

Hello Spartans,

My name is Juliette Vayer and I am a rising senior at UNCG.  I am an out of state student, originally from Northern Virginia and I am majoring in Interpreting, Deaf Education, and Advocacy (IDEAS), with a concentration in Interpreting.

This summer I am traveling to Siena, Italy to learn Italian Sign Language, Italian Deaf culture, and Italian spoken language. I previously tried to do this program before COVID hit and am grateful to have this opportunity now.

One of the major things I hope to get out of this experience is improving language fluency! There are other Deaf students going to study abroad so I know that whether I will be using Italian sign language or American Sign Language my hands will be up most of the time! I’m also just incredibly excited to get the opportunity to travel and learn about another country and its history.

I believe, as humans, it is our job to continue learning about others and the world around us. Exposing ourselves to new places and new cultures allows for us to go into new experiences with a more open mind and caring heart. I am excited for this opportunity to study abroad!
