As a first-year librarian, Jennifer Miller turned to social media, specifically TikTok, for tips from others in the field. In less than a year, the UNC Greensboro Master of Library and Information Science student has gone from someone who had never used TikTok to being the most followed school librarian on the platform with over 417,000 followers and 11.3 million likes.
Research that is having a direct impact on North Carolinians led to UNC Greensboro students Sarah Leck and Stacy Huff representing the university, and the School of Education’s Department of Information, Library, and Research Sciences, at the annual Graduate Education Day hosted by the North Carolina Council of Graduate Schools.
Dawn Shirk ’23, a library media specialist with Guilford County Schools, says that a school library is the heart of the institution. “When I was a teacher, I collaborated with the librarian a lot. Even if we weren’t in the middle of a specific project, I could come in and say, ‘Here’s what I’m planning. Can you help me find some good books or websites? How would you do this?’”
Out of nearly 1,400 nominees, Gabriel Graña, a 2015 graduate of the University of North Carolina Greensboro’s Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) program, was selected as one of 10 recipients of the I Love My Librarian Award from the American Library Association
The online Master’s of Library and Information Science program in the University of North Carolina Greensboro School of Education’s Department of Information, Library, and Research Sciences has been ranked the ninth-best program in the nation and the top one in North Carolina.
In 2019, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) declared that “students deserve access to, and success in, a rich and diverse curriculum…along with a well-equipped media center staffed by a qualified media specialist.” At the time, 40% of the district’s schools were without a dedicated library or media specialist.
Students in Dr. Izzet Lofca’s Information Organization 3 class in the UNC Greensboro School of Education’s Department of Information, Library, and Research Sciences recently had the opportunity for a hands-on learning experience by working with Microchip Technology to crawl the company’s website, produce a sentiment analysis, and develop FAQ documents.
Longtime UNC Greensboro professor, Dr. Lloyd Bond, passed away on September 28. Bond spent over a decade teaching in the School of Education’s former Department of Educational Research Methodology.
Information science addresses the needs of a world where we can feel overwhelmed by all the data at our fingertips. Dr. Lisa O’Connor, associate professor and chair of library and information science, developed the program within the School of Education to teach students how to organize information and make it accessible to people, communities, companies, and other organizations.
Looking to help train library practitioners and organizations in techniques for community collaboration and civic engagement along with professional soft skills not typically addressed in Library and Information Science curriculum, Dr. April Dawkins in UNC Greensboro’s Department of Library, Information, and Research Sciences and Dr. Lucy Santos Green of the University of Iowa have been awarded a nearly $250,000 grant for a two-year project.
