Two young girls walk in a school hallway

Student: Sylvia Lawrence

Some 5th grade female students showed deficits in their social and vocabulary skills. This project involved creation of a book club to address both issues.

What is the project’s goal?

Improve students’ social and vocabulary skills.

What is the innovation?

Regular book club meetings were held, during which vocabulary words were discussed. Students were encouraged to share their feelings about the books they read.

What has been the impact?

The school principal and teachers noted improvement in the girls’ attitudes toward reading and socializing.  Book club members are taking on leadership roles, engaging in read-alouds with Kindergarten students and assisting the school counselor with lessons on bullying.
