Why Did you Choose UNCG?

I chose to attend UNCG for its education program and beautiful, lively campus. The education department at UNCG has so many successful graduates who have gone on to be great educators. I also love that UNCG isn’t far from home so I’m still able to go home. All the clubs and social activities drew me to UNCG.

What is your favorite place on campus?

I love after eating my dinner going and sitting by the fountain with my friends. We watch the people skateboarding and we just talk and decompress about our days and what’s going on.

What activities and organizations are you involved in on campus?

I am part of the Spartan Education Scholars, crochet club, UNO club, and the pickleball club.

What experience at UNCG has had the most significant impact on you?

I really struggled the first week I moved in; it was the first time I had really been away from home and it was really hard. I didn’t think it would feel normal being in college and I felt so stuck in my room and alone. What really helped me was the club fair. It was so cool to see all the clubs and sports I could join. I knew I could find so many new friends and have so much fun. I’ve made friends at the clubs I joined and had so many great times.

What has been your favorite class and why?

My favorite class so far has been my math class. My professor Zack is so funny and relatable. He makes the class so lively even though it’s at 8 in the morning. I really like the topics we’ve been learning and I feel like I’m retaining them well.

What are your career goals?

I want to become a special education teacher. I haven’t decided what grade, but I will be licensed K-12 so I can have choices.

What made you want to choose a career in This Field?

I’ve always wanted to work with children. When I was a sophomore in high school, I had the opportunity to intern in an adaptive PE class. I was nervous, but after the first day I fell in love with the kids I worked with. I loved seeing them meet their IEP goals, come out of their shells with me, and learn how to adapt to meet their needs. I then interned in an EC classroom in the high school and elementary school setting and I loved it even more. I’ve known for a long time being an EC teacher is my future career and helping these kids become more independent is what I want to do.

What advice would you give a student considering UNCG and the School of Education?

I would tell them that this is the best place for education. Everyone in the department is there to help you succeed and there are so many resources to help you. I know when I leave UNCG I will be confident going into the classroom.

How Has the Spartan Education Scholars Program Impacted Your Experience at UNCG?

I am a freshman, so I haven’t experienced much about being a Spartan Education Scholar. I can’t wait to get to give back to our community because our community was so gracious to us. I also am excited to have Dr. (Faith) Freeman to help me and be with me through my four years. I will learn a lot from her and from the program.
