Dawkins Awarded Grant to Assist Libraries Develop Community Relationships

Looking to help train library practitioners and organizations in techniques for community collaboration and civic engagement along with professional soft skills not typically addressed in Library and Information Science curriculum, Dr. April Dawkins in UNC Greensboro’s Department of Library, Information, and Research Sciences and Dr. Lucy Santos Green of the University of Iowa have been awarded a nearly $250,000 grant for a two-year project. 

SOE Mourns Passing of Dr. Jon Henner

It is with profound sadness that we share with you that Dr. Jonathan (Jon) Henner passed away following a battle with cancer. Jon joined the School of Education faculty in 2016 as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Specialized Education Services and the Interpreting, Deaf Education, and Advocacy Services program. He became the first Deaf tenured professor at UNCG when he was promoted to Associate Professor in 2022.

Bost Selected as CEC President-Elect

The Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) has announced that Dr. Julie Bost, assistant clinical professor in the Department of Specialized Education Services, has been named 2024 CEC President-Elect. Bost will assume the presidency on January 1, 2025, overseeing CEC’s committees and Board of Directors and providing critical leadership on the organization’s planning and programs.

Carmona’s APA Fellowship to Allow Her to Expand Immigration Assistance

While pursuing her doctorate as a student in the Department of Counseling and Educational Development in the UNC Greensboro School of Education, Melissa Carmona continues to work as a clinical mental health counselor in her practice, Cafecito Counseling. She specializes in trauma and eating disorders, but has worked with numerous people in need of evaluations for immigration services.

As the 2023-2024 school year begins, the UNC Greensboro School of Education has announced the merger of the Department of Library and Information Science (LIS) and the Department of Educational Research Methodology (ERM). The joined unit will be known as the Department of Information, Library, and Research Sciences (ILRS).

Visit to Finland Exposes Student Teachers to New Experiences

In April of 2023, 16 UNC Greensboro School of Education student teachers traveled to Oulu, Finland, to extend their student teaching experience. Finland is one of the world’s highest achieving countries according to the PISA, the international exam for measuring educational achievement.

Online Program Enables Student’s Dream

Kat Robinson spent many years as a stay-at-home mom to her two sons, who are enrolled in the North Carolina Virtual Academy and complete schoolwork at home. A suggestion from one of her son’s teachers sent her down a new path.
