Thursday, November 14: Basic Tax Preparation for Sign Language Interpreters, hosted by SOE PID Progam and UNCG Bryan School

Please join us at UNC Greensboro for an introductory workshop on small business taxes for sign language interpreters. Topics covered will include tax information for areas such as automobiles, home offices, and basic retirement and health care. This is a joint presentation by the faculty of the Professions in Deafness program (UNC Greensboro School of Education Specialized Education Services Department) and the Bryan School of Business.

Audience: This presentation is geared towards working professionals and students of interpretation. 

Educational Objectives: By the end of this presentation, the participants should be able to outline various expenditures that are allowed and list resources for small businesses regarding taxes 


Our presenter for the evening will be Patricia Cates, a lecturer of accounting in the Bryan School of Business and Economics at UNC Greensboro. Ms. Cates is an alumnus of UNC Greensboro, having received both her Bachelor of Science and her Master of Science in Accounting from the University.

Prior to joining the faculty at UNC Greensboro, Ms. Cates served in a progression of positions with the National Board for Certified Counselors & Affiliates (NBCC), joining as a staff accountant and progressing to the position of Chief Business Officer while at NBCC. She entered the academic field in 2001 as an instructor of accounting at Guilford Technical Community College and advanced to the position of Department Chair and Interim Division Chair during her tenure there.

Ms. Cates later joined the UNC Greensboro faculty in 2018 and her courses include introductory accounting classes at the undergraduate level as well as Taxation of Corporation and Shareholders at the graduate level. She holds both a current CPA license in the state of North Carolina and the Chartered Global Management Accountant Designation, and is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the NC Association of CPAs.
