UNC Greensboro’s online B.S. in Special Education: General Curriculum (T.A. to Teacher Pathway) provides a flexible, licensure-focused pathway for currently employed paraprofessionals. Through a blend of synchronous and asynchronous coursework, candidates build the knowledge, skills, and clinical experience needed to teach students with disabilities in K–12 settings—all while continuing to work in their school communities.

Clinical Requirements for Fall: Candidates complete internship experiences within K–12 school settings under the supervision of mentor teachers and university faculty. Assignments include observations, instructional support activities, and application of evidence-based behavior management practices.

Clinical Requirements for Spring: Candidates complete a full-time student teaching placement under the supervision of a qualified cooperating teacher and university supervisor. During this semester, candidates demonstrate competency in instructional planning, assessment, classroom management, collaboration, and implementation of individualized supports for students with disabilities.

Admissions & Requirements 

To be considered for admission to the B.S. in Special Education: General Curriculum (T.A. to Teacher Pathway) – Online, applicants must meet the following minimum admission requirements: 

  • Currently employed as a teacher assistant/paraprofessional in a K–12 school setting (departmental review required)  
  • Completion of an undergraduate admissions application to UNC Greensboro  
  • An associate degree from a North Carolina Community College System (NCCCS) institution or equivalent transferable associate degree  
  • A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.7  
  • Passing Praxis Core scores or documentation of a scheduled Praxis Core testing date  

Praxis Core Requirements 

For students beginning in Fall 2026 (first cohort), submission of passing Praxis Core scores is preferred at the time of application. Applicants who have not yet passed the Praxis Core may still be admitted and enroll in regular program coursework; however, passing scores must be submitted by the end of the Fall 2026 semester. Students who do not achieve passing scores by the end of the semester will not be permitted to continue in the program. 

For students beginning in Summer 2027 and beyond, passing Praxis Core scores may be submitted either at the time of application or by the end of the summer semester while enrolled in coursework. Students who do not achieve passing scores by the end of the semester will not be permitted to continue in the program. 

Additional Information 

Applicants who are admitted to UNC Greensboro but do not meet program eligibility requirements may be considered for other online academic programs offered by the university. 

Students in the program may be eligible for financial aid and scholarship opportunities based on university and federal guidelines.
