Nora Bird was a practicing academic librarian for twenty years in several academic institutions before completing her dissertation on the effect of websites on learning about controversial science, specifically genetically modified foods. She has studied and written about community college libraries, practicum experiences in library education, and digital libraries for cultural heritage. She teaches in the areas of information sources and services, organization and access of information, digital libraries, and academic libraries.
