SOE Staff Holiday Project

(from Deb Ackerman)

This year’s SOE Staff holiday project will be collecting and creating packets for the homeless through the IRC (Interactive Resource Center). Website: http://gsodaycenter.org/

Matt Fisher has created an electronic sign-up sheet which all of you can access through the following link: http://tinyurl.com/mysm4ep

We are hoping to make at least 20 packets (10 for men and 10 for women). There are also gently-used items listed at the bottom that we can also collect for the IRC to disburse, as needed.

Please sign up for the items (most are in sets of 5) you wish to donate by filling in your name in one or more spaces on the spreadsheet.  We need a name in every space in order to fill the 20 bags!!

All items should be turned in to Deb Ackerman by Monday, December 16th.

We will assemble the bags and take them to the IRC on Tuesday, Dec. 17th.

Assembly:  1:00-1:30pm in room 301

Delivery: after assembly of bags  (407 East Washington St.  Greensboro)

LMS Study Underway

(message from Nanette DeBerry, SOE Instructional Technology Consultant)

UNCG ITS and the Academic Technology Coordination (ATCC) Committee are conducting a detailed LMS study at the request of the Provost and Vice Chancellor of ITS. UNCG’s Blackboard Learn contract expires in a few years. Therefore, we are exploring the strengths & weaknesses of other LMSs.

ITS/ATCC are seeking faculty volunteers from each unit to pilot test the latest versions of Blackboard, Canvas and Desire2Learn beginning Spring 2014.

The pilots of these LMSs will begin Spring semester 2014.  Please contact Nanette DeBerry if you would like to participate in the LMS pilot testing.

Please be advised that Nanette DeBerry (nmdeberr@uncg.edu) and Matthew Fisher (msfishe2@uncg.edu) will be available to provide any support on the pilots that you may need. Please contact Matt or Nanette if you have any questions regarding the LMS study. Thank you for your consideration, and we hope to hear from you soon.

 SOE ITS Training Options

In response to the faculty retreat evaluations, SOE ITS is offering a variety of options for instructional technology support. A full listing of training options can be found  here.

Teacher Education Faculty Professional Learning Community

Through Project ENRICH, we are establishing a faculty professional learning community around facilitating teacher candidate use of technology in teaching. The group is open to full time faculty, adjunct faculty and advanced graduate students who teach in the initial licensure programs. Participants will set their own individual goals to develop an activity or assignment for their courses that enhances candidate use of technology in teaching (either online teaching or face-to-face using technology). Participating faculty will contribute to the School of Education online repository of resources for teaching with technology.  Those who participate regularly will be eligible to receive a stipend, money to purchase technology needed for the activities that they develop, and travel funds to present on their work at conferences such as ISTE or Lilly.  If interested, please contact Christina O’Connor at ckoconno@uncg.edu.

UPDATE ON NORTH CAROLINA TAX WITHHOLDING

Access to NC-4 Payroll Tax Withholding Form through UNCGenie

As a new feature, beginning Monday, Dec. 9, employees will have the ability to update their NC-4 State Payroll Withholding Tax information for activity effective Jan. 1, 2014, or later, as well as view history of tax election (withholding status and number of allowances claimed), within UNCGenie self-service. Instructions to access this new feature can be retrieved from the Payroll Forms webpage at http://payroll.uncg.edu/formsinformation/.

North Carolina Payroll Tax Withholding Tax Information Effective Jan. 1, 2014

The North Carolina General Assembly recently enacted House Bill 998, which is effective Jan. 1, 2014. As a result, how you determine the number of allowances for tax year 2014 will differ from previous years. Under this new law, taxpayers may no longer claim a personal exemption for themselves, their spouse, children, or other qualifying dependents. Additionally, many deductions and tax credits that impact North Carolina withholding tax are no longer available for tax years beginning on or after Jan. 1. Most taxpayers will not be entitled to as many allowances and, as a result, more taxpayers should claim zero (0) allowances. Additional information is available at http://www.dornc.com/press/2013/nc4requirement.html.

In accordance with the new regulations, employers must set the default NC withholding status to “Single” with “0” allowances unless the employee specifically provides documentation otherwise. To comply with the new North Carolina tax law, your NC-4 tax withholding record in the Banner Payroll System has been changed to reflect the status of “Single” with “0” allowances and “$0” additional withholding, effective Jan. 1, 2014.

Beginning, Dec. 9, 2013, if you determine that your withholding information should differ from this standard default of “Single” with “0” allowances and “$0” additional withholding, you should update your applicable Form NC-4 withholding information in UNCGenie.

Although the Payroll Office staff cannot provide tax (including withholding) advice, if you have general questions, please contact payroll1@uncg.edu.
