SOE Research Awards Ceremony – Friday, March 28
The inaugural SOE Research Awards Ceremony, celebrating and honoring SOE research activity over this year will be held on Friday, March 28th, from 9:00am to 12:00 pm in room #118 SOEB. At this ceremony the 2014 Faculty awards for Distinguished Research Scholar and Distinguished Senior Research Scholar will be presented, as well as Graduate Student Research awards. There will be presentations from last year SOE Research faculty award recipients, Dr. Micheline Chalhoub-Deville and Dr. Edna Tan, as well as ‘3 Minute Thesis’ talks from the top graduate researcher in each department. Graduate students, faculty and staff are strongly encouraged to attend.
Rebecca Carver Institute on Experiential Education – Friday, March 28
The Rebecca Carver Institute on Experiential Education, sponsored by the Educational Leadership & Cultural Foundations department in SOE, will hold a day-long intensive workshop on Friday, March 28, from 9am-4pm in the Faculty Center (FTLC) on the UNCG Campus. Nettie Pardue, Global Leadership Coach, Experiential Educator and Curriculum Designer, from the Outward Bound Center for Peace-building, invites all faculty members to a daylong workshop to explore a unique and interactive framework that can be applied to better equip students to deeply engage with global communities and to become more compassionate local and global citizens. Global engagement is the focus for this year’s workshop, and the event is designed for both seasoned and new educators. The Rebecca Carver Institute is in honor of former UNCG professor, Dr. Rebecca Carver. American Sign Language Idol – Sunday, April 13
American Sign Language Idol will take place on Sunday, April 13, at 3:00pm in the Elliott University Center Auditorium on the UNCG Campus. This year’s theme is ‘The Motown Era!’ featuring students performing popular songs in ASL from Motown greats such as the Temptations, Marvin Gaye, and the Supremes. Admission is $5 ($3 for children ages 6-12; free admission for children ages 5 and under. Money from ticket sales and donations will go to help our Deaf-Blind friends attend Camp Dogwood.

The 6th Annual Technology Institute for Educators is scheduled for April 25-26, 2014 at North Carolina Central University. UNCG Young Writers’ Camp – July 14-25, 2014
The UNCG Young Writers’ Camp, a two-week camp in its third year, is for students in grades 3-12. It will be offered July 14-July 25, 2014, in the UNCG School of Education Building. Campers will create 21st century texts using digital tools such as storyboarding, blogging, and movie-making during this two-week camp experience. The camp introduces young writers to the writing process, unlocks strategies of professional writers, and supports a variety of writing styles. Post Award Administrator Transition Schedule

The Office of Research appreciates your patience with the transition of responsibilities since Sheila Gambardella left her Post-Award Administrator position. We were in the process of hiring a replacement, but those efforts have been put on hold due to budget considerations. We anticipate the vacancy lasting no less than three months before we post the position again. During this time, the Dean’s Office staff is working together to make sure you have the support you need for contract and grant pre- and post- award activities.
Deana will continue to do all of her pre-award administrator duties. However, we have decided to divide up the post award responsibilities among Deana, Sue and Terri. Please note that Sue will only be available to help out with post-award responsibilities on MWF from 8:30-12:30. Thus, if you have to see her please make it during those times.
Below is how we divided up the post-award responsibilities:
- Award set-up, no-cost extension requests and close-out
- Budget transfer and inquiry/summary
- Processing of honoraria, and BANFIN / reimbursement requests, and contracted services forms
- Processing of Travel forms that DO NOT include the use of PCard
- Student tuition forms
- Hiring paperwork for students and staff to be put on grants (Deana will work with Terri Lawson for hiring process)
- Communication regarding course release and add-pay personnel actions (Deana will work with Terry Lawson to schedule grant-related EPAF creation)
- Primary contact for Contracts & Grants
- EPAF creation and documentation
- Hiring paperwork

School of Education 2014-2015 Scholarship Application Now Available Online
Faculty and Staff, please let your students know they can apply for a School of Education scholarship from February 1, 2014 to April 1, 2014.
An email will also go out to all current education students inviting them to apply.
All scholarship recipients will be notified by email by August 1st.
Scholarships are awarded based on merit, financial need, and other specific criteria for each scholarship. Priority is given to students with a 3.0 GPA and who have already been admitted or will have applications pending admission to the School of Education.

Teacher Education Faculty Professional Learning Community
Through Project ENRICH, we are establishing a faculty professional learning community around facilitating teacher candidate use of technology in teaching. The group is open to full time faculty, adjunct faculty and advanced graduate students who teach in the initial licensure programs. Participants will set their own individual goals to develop an activity or assignment for their courses that enhances candidate use of technology in teaching (either online teaching or face-to-face using technology). Participating faculty will contribute to the School of Education online repository of resources for teaching with technology. Those who participate regularly will be eligible to receive a stipend, money to purchase technology needed for the activities that they develop, and travel funds to present on their work at conferences such as ISTE or Lilly. Spring SOE Service Project for Faculty & Staff – Murphey Traditional Academy – Turn in Items by March 31

I first want to thank everyone that participated in the fall SOE service project – collecting supplies and clothing for the homeless serviced through The Interactive Resource Center (IRC) of Greensboro. It was amazing what we accomplished together by working as a team.
The spring SOE service project will be collecting items for the Back Pack project at Murphey Traditional Academy (K-5) school in Greensboro. We want to help fill-up their backpacks for their spring break week with some food & fun activities!
The Principal, Ms. Cheryl Beeson describes the project in the statement below:
We supply Back Packs of food every Friday to approximately 40 students. The food comes from the Out of the Garden project. Because 88% of our students receive Free or Reduced Lunches and all students receive free breakfast daily, food over the weekends can be a challenge to several of our families.
If you’d like to be involved in this SOE service project (both staff and faculty are welcome to join in), please sign up to donate items by clicking on the google spreadsheet below (created by none other than the amazing Matt Fisher).
You can drop off the items to Deb Ackerman, room #128 SOEB. Please make sure to turn your items in by March 31.

CANCELLATION – Spring Habitat Build Service Project for Faculty & Staff

Unfortunately, we have received word from Peacehaven Community Farm that the April 23rd Habitat Build has been cancelled, due to trade workers being behind schedule. We had eight people ready to go and I know the weather was going to be perfect that day!!
I will keep you posted if we decide to try to reschedule another day.

If we have 5 or more people interested, they will deliver to the School of Education. Last year they delivered to the Bryan School. It would be great to have fresh veggies delivered here. Please let me know if you’re interested and I will contact them to set up delivery. All you need to do is send in the form. I participated last year and it was a very good experience!
